Steel door frames for the complete opening

A metal door frame is not interchangeable across every wall condition. The frame must match the wall construction, opening dimensions, door thickness, handing, hardware reinforcement and installation sequence. For fire-rated openings, the frame must also be coordinated with the selected door assembly and project documentation.

Specification itemWhat to confirm before production
Wall constructionConcrete, masonry, stud drywall or another partition system determines the frame profile and anchoring approach.
Frame profile and depthConfirm wall thickness, throat size, stop dimension, face width and whether the frame is welded or knock-down.
Door coordinationMatch leaf thickness, handing, hinge locations, strike preparation, closer reinforcement and clearances.
Fire-rated openingReview the required rating, label or listing basis, glazing and hardware configuration for the specified opening.
Finish and packingConfirm primer or powder-coat finish, opening marks, protective wrapping and container loading requirements.

Choose the frame around the wall condition

Masonry metal door frames

Used with concrete and block openings. Profiles, anchors, grout requirements and installation sequence should be reviewed with the wall detail.

Review masonry frame options

Drywall metal door frames

Used with stud partitions. The wall thickness, stud arrangement, anchor type and drywall sequence affect the frame selected.

Hollow metal doors and frames

For high-traffic commercial and industrial openings, coordinate the frame with the leaf, core, finish and hardware preparation.

Frame anchors and hardware preparation

Anchors should be selected for the wall material and installation sequence, not chosen as an afterthought. Hinge and strike reinforcements, closer brackets, coordinators, panic hardware and electrified hardware must be shown on the approved schedule or shop drawings. See the commercial door frame anchors guide for the information to provide before quotation.

Project note: 鈥淪teel door frame,鈥?鈥渕etal door frame鈥?and 鈥渉ollow metal door frame鈥?are common search terms. The correct technical choice depends on the complete opening. Send the wall detail and door schedule so the frame is not selected in isolation.

Information to send for a steel door frame quotation

Provide the opening schedule, wall type and thickness, frame dimensions, handing, door thickness, rating requirement, hardware schedule, finish, quantities and destination. This allows Bastion to coordinate steel door frames with the door package and export packing plan.

Metal door frame and hollow metal frame details to include in a schedule

“Metal door frame”, “door frame metal” and “hollow metal frame” are broad search terms. For a usable commercial door frame quotation, the schedule needs enough information to identify the correct profile and wall connection.

  • Wall condition: masonry, stud-and-drywall, existing wall or a specialty partition.
  • Profile: face dimension, stop, return, throat and finished wall thickness.
  • Anchors: anchor type, quantity, adjustment range and installation sequence.
  • Door and hardware: leaf size, handing, hinge/strike/closer preparations and any electrified routing.
  • Fire performance: the required door-and-frame assembly, labels and compatible accessories where a rated opening is specified.

Commercial metal door frames are not interchangeable

A hollow metal door jamb detail for drywall differs from a masonry frame set as the wall is built. Confirm the finished wall thickness and site sequence before the frame is fabricated. Compare masonry door frames, drywall door frames and door frame anchors for the relevant installation path.
