Steel Door Gauge Thickness: 14, 16, 18 and 20 Gauge Explained

Steel door gauge is a familiar buying term, but a gauge number alone does not describe the complete door. Face-sheet thickness, construction, core, reinforcements, edge design and tested performance work together.

Lower gauge numbers traditionally indicate thicker steel, but current specifications should use minimum decimal thickness and a recognized performance level. Select construction based on traffic, abuse, hardware loads, exposure and required testing—not price or gauge alone.

Why steel door gauge thickness matters

Two doors described with the same old gauge term may not have identical minimum thickness or performance. Decimal thickness and a referenced standard make bids easier to compare and reduce disputes when submittals are reviewed.

What 20, 18, 16 and 14 gauge mean

ANSI/SDI A250.8 lists minimum decimal thicknesses for steel door faces and treats the traditional Manufacturer Standard Gauge number as a reference. The table gives 20 gauge as 0.032 inch (0.8 mm), 18 gauge as 0.042 inch (1.0 mm), 16 gauge as 0.053 inch (1.3 mm), and 14 gauge as 0.067 inch (1.7 mm). These are minimum thickness references within that standard, not a universal conversion for every steel product.

When a project follows a different national standard, do not transfer these values automatically. State the required standard and decimal thickness in the RFQ, then ask the supplier to show the proposed construction in the submittal.

Use decimal thickness in the specification

Write the required minimum steel thickness and reference the applicable product standard. Gauge terminology can remain as an informal cross-reference, but the submittal should show the actual material thickness used for the face sheets and reinforcements.

Separate door-face thickness from frame thickness

The steel face on the door leaf and the steel used for the frame are separate specification items. A request for an 18-gauge door does not automatically define the frame profile or frame material thickness. Wall construction, anchor type, frame depth, door weight and hardware loads all affect the frame selection.

List the leaf and frame requirements independently. For masonry, drywall, concrete or panel walls, include the wall thickness and anchor condition so the frame can be quoted with the correct profile and installation method.

Match construction to duty level

A lightly used interior office and a high-cycle factory corridor create different impact, hinge and hardware loads. Review door size, frequency of use, cart traffic, closer force and potential abuse before selecting a heavier construction.

Do not ignore hardware reinforcements

Locks, hinges, exit devices, closers and pulls transfer concentrated loads into the door. Confirm reinforcement type and preparation with the approved hardware set, particularly for continuous hinges, wide doors and surface-mounted devices.

Compare supplier submittals on the same basis

When comparing quotations, check whether each supplier has stated minimum steel thickness, overall door thickness, core type, edge construction and hardware reinforcement. A lower price may reflect a different construction rather than a direct alternative to the specified door.

Ask for exceptions to be listed opening by opening. Oversized leaves, wide vision panels, heavy closers, continuous hinges and surface-mounted exit devices may require reinforcement or a different construction level. These details should be resolved before production, not after the hardware arrives on site.

Evaluate coating and environment separately

More steel thickness is not a substitute for suitable corrosion protection. Exterior, coastal, humid and wash-down openings need coordinated substrate, pretreatment, finish, edge sealing and maintenance requirements.

Recommended specification sequence

  1. Define the opening. Confirm the room function, wall construction, clear opening, door swing and applicable rating before selecting a product.
  2. Coordinate the assembly. Review the leaf, frame, glazing, seals and hardware as one opening. A compliant component can still fail when it is paired with an incompatible part.
  3. Confirm the approved information. Put dimensions, preparations, finishes, labels and accessories into the door schedule and shop drawings before fabrication.
  4. Inspect the installed result. Check alignment, clearances, operation, positive latching and field changes against the approved submittal and local requirements.

Information to send with an RFQ

A useful quotation is based on opening-level information, not a door count alone. Send the following items so the manufacturer can identify missing dimensions or construction differences early:

  • Door sizes, swings and quantities
  • Traffic and abuse level by opening
  • Fire, acoustic or thermal performance
  • Complete hardware sets
  • Interior or exterior exposure and finish

For overseas projects, also state the destination, packing method, required certificates and the approval milestone that controls production.

Is 14 gauge always better than 18 gauge?

Not for every opening. Thicker steel can improve robustness but adds cost and weight. Specify the tested performance and duty appropriate to the location.

Does door thickness mean face-sheet thickness?
