Coastal salt, industrial chemicals, humidity and wash-down service attack more than the door face. Edges, frames, fasteners, hardware cutouts and damaged coatings often fail first.
Quick answer
Classify the exposure and cleaning chemicals, then coordinate galvannealed or stainless construction, pretreatment, compatible topcoat, sealed edges, corrosion-resistant hardware and drainage. Include repair and wash-down procedures in maintenance documents.
Why corrosion resistant steel doors matters
A heavier door face without a suitable coating system may still corrode rapidly. Performance depends on materials and details across the complete opening and on how coating damage is repaired.
Define the corrosive exposure
State distance from saltwater, sheltered or direct rain, humidity, chemical splash, temperature and cleaning agents. Generic exterior language is not enough for severe sites.
Select substrate and coating together
Galvannealed A40 or A60 construction is common for paint adhesion and corrosion protection; stainless may suit harsher chemical conditions. Confirm grade, pretreatment and finish compatibility.
Eliminate water traps and bare edges
Coordinate top caps, bottom channels, glazing stops, fasteners, sealant and frame-to-wall joints. Provide drainage while preventing water from entering internal cavities.
Create a repair and inspection plan
Shipping damage, field drilling and hardware wear expose metal. Specify touch-up products, surface preparation and inspection intervals, especially at bottoms and horizontal ledges.
Project checklist
| Item | Decision to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure | Salt, chemicals, humidity and wash-down | Sets material |
| Substrate | Galvannealed or stainless grade | Provides base resistance |
| Finish | Pretreatment, primer and topcoat | Creates barrier |
| Hardware | Corrosion-resistant materials | Protects interfaces |
| Maintenance | Wash, inspect and repair cycle | Extends service life |
A practical delivery workflow
- Define the opening. Confirm location, room use, wall, size, swing, ratings, exposure and owner operations.
- Coordinate the assembly. Review leaf, frame, glazing, hardware, seals, controls and finishes as one system.
- Freeze approved information. Resolve comments and RFIs before fabrication; record revisions in the door schedule and shop drawings.
- Verify delivery and installation. Inspect labels, packing, dimensions, preparations, clearances, operation and maintenance records.
Information to send with an RFQ
A reliable quotation needs opening-level data, not only total quantities:
- Environmental exposure statement
- Required substrate and coating designation
- Finish color and chemical resistance
- Hardware materials and fasteners
- Sealant, drainage and maintenance requirements
For overseas supply, also state the destination, packing method, required certificates, delivery sequence and approval milestone.
Frequently asked questions
Is galvanized steel the same as galvannealed?
No. Both are zinc-coated, but galvannealed is further treated to form a zinc-iron alloy and is commonly selected for paint adhesion.
Is A60 more corrosion resistant than A40?
SDI notes that the heavier coating provides more zinc and greater protection under normal atmospheric conditions, but the complete finish system still matters.
When is stainless steel appropriate?
It may be preferred for severe chemical or hygiene exposure; select grade and finish from the actual agents and cleaning process.
