Should Hollow Metal Door Frames Be Grouted?

Grouting a hollow metal frame is not a universal quality upgrade. It may be required for a specific wall, detail or performance condition, but unnecessary or poorly executed grout can deform the frame and create corrosion or hardware problems.

What the Steel Door Institute recommends

The Steel Door Institute states that standard steel frames, including fire-rated frames, do not require grout unless the frame manufacturer listing or the project design specifically calls for it. A properly anchored frame should not be treated as incomplete simply because its cavity is empty.

SDI also advises against grouting standard frames in drywall construction. Wet grout can transfer moisture into gypsum board, anchors, fasteners and the bottom of the frame. It does not automatically add useful structural rigidity. An exception may apply to certain high-STC assemblies when grouting was part of the tested construction; that condition must be confirmed from the approved acoustic assembly rather than assumed.

Ask what performance the grout is meant to provide

Separate structural anchorage, sound control, fire detailing and security objectives. If the requirement cannot be tied to a design detail or tested assembly, adding grout may introduce risk without solving a defined problem.

Separate masonry details from drywall details

In masonry construction, grout may be shown around the frame as part of the wall detail. When it is required, confirm the anchor type, frame throat, wall condition and placement sequence before installation. The frame must be braced or fastened so pressure from the fill does not change jamb spread, twist or alignment.

For drywall partitions, use the frame and anchors intended for the stud-wall system. Do not copy a masonry note onto a drywall opening. If sound control is the reason for filling the frame, review the tested STC construction and the surrounding wall, seals and penetrations; filling the frame alone does not define the acoustic performance of the opening.

Protect preparations and reinforcements

Mortar entering hinge, strike, closer or electrical preparations can make the frame unusable. Verify mortar guards, conduit routing and access points before placement, especially at electrified openings.

Control grout consistency and placement

Where masonry-frame grouting is approved, use the consistency and placement method stated in the project detail and manufacturer instructions. SDI erection guidance calls for a controlled, hand-placed mix rather than a thin pumpable grout. Filling too quickly or using excessive fluid pressure can bow the jambs and contaminate hardware preparations.

Install mortar guards and protect hinge, strike, closer, electrical and silencer preparations before work starts. Closed mullions and thermally broken frame sections need separate review because filling them can trap moisture or defeat the intended construction. Recheck plumb, level, square, throat and jamb spread during placement and again after curing.

Control pressure and frame geometry

A fluid fill placed too quickly can push jambs out of alignment. Brace the frame, use approved placement lifts and recheck throat, diagonals, plumb and spreader dimensions throughout the work.

Consider moisture and coating compatibility

Wet grout can expose the inside of a frame to moisture. Confirm internal coating, grout composition, drainage and curing conditions with the manufacturer, particularly for exterior or corrosion-sensitive openings.
