Use a suitable gap gauge and record multiple readings at the head and both jambs. On pairs, check the meeting edge from top to bottom. Photographs should include the opening mark and the measuring tool so the punch item can be verified later.

Establish the correct measurement reference

Measure the gap between the actual door edge and the corresponding frame, adjacent leaf, threshold or finished floor surface. Record whether the floor is complete and whether a removable threshold, saddle or floor covering is already installed. Measurements taken before tile, carpet or a raised threshold is in place can lead to the wrong conclusion about the finished opening.

Use the same method at every opening. Note the measuring tool, opening number and reading location rather than writing a single average value. A consistent record makes it possible to compare the hinge side, latch side and head and to see whether the problem is isolated or follows the frame geometry.
