Hardware preparation begins with the opening function
Door hardware preparation should follow the room use, door type, traffic level and life-safety requirements. A hardware item cannot be reviewed in isolation: hinges affect handing and weight, locks must align with strikes, and closers need suitable reinforcement and mounting space. Start with a hardware set for each door mark.
Confirm handing and hinge requirements
Record the handing consistently on the schedule and drawings. Confirm hinge type, size, quantity, material and any heavy-duty or security requirement. The door leaf and frame need matching reinforcement and machining. For wide, tall or glazed leaves, review the weight before selecting standard hinges.
Coordinate locks, strikes and access control
Specify the lock function, backset, cylinder format, lever or pull arrangement and strike. Electrified locks, magnetic locks, contacts and card readers require cable paths, power-transfer details and coordination with the security contractor. Confirm whether hardware will be factory installed, supplied loose or sourced locally.
Review closers and panic hardware
- Identify surface-mounted, concealed or floor-spring closer requirements.
- Confirm closer reinforcement and permitted mounting side.
- Match panic bars and vertical rods to the leaf and frame construction.
- Check dogging, alarm, trim and access-control interfaces where required.

Use coordinated submittals
The final schedule should connect the door mark, leaf, frame, hardware set and keying information. Shop drawings should show preparations for hinges, locks, strikes, closers, flush bolts, coordinators and sensors. Resolve conflicts before steel cutting or edge machining begins.
What to send for quotation
Provide the door schedule, hardware schedule, opening sizes, handing, door material, rating and preferred brands or performance level. Include access-control diagrams when available. Submit these files through the project quotation form so door and hardware preparation can be reviewed together.
