Lead-Lined X-Ray Doors: What Project Buyers Need to Know
Start with the shielding design
Lead-lined X-ray doors are part of a room鈥檚 radiation-shielding envelope. The required lead equivalence and coverage should come from the project鈥檚 qualified shielding design, not from a standard door assumption. Send the room drawings, wall build-up, opening size and shielding notes so the door can be coordinated with the surrounding barrier.
Maintain continuity through the leaf and frame
The shielding layer must be detailed across the door leaf and around the frame without unintended gaps. Confirm frame construction, wall interface, stops, thresholds where applicable and the overlap between protected components. Specify observation glazing correctly
If an observation window is required, provide its size, position and specified lead equivalence. Lead glass, glazing beads and the surrounding shielded cutout should be reviewed as one detail. Larger glazing changes door weight and may affect hinges, closer selection and permitted configurations.
Coordinate hardware for a heavier door
- Confirm handing, hinge capacity and the number of hinges.
- Select locks, pulls and access control for the clinical workflow.
- Review closer force, stops and protection plates.
- Identify automatic operators or interlocks when required by the project.
Hardware preparation should not interrupt the shielding layer. The complete arrangement needs to be shown on coordinated shop drawings before production.

Radiation shielding does not automatically establish fire, acoustic or smoke performance. If the opening has other requirements, state them clearly and ask whether the proposed configuration supports the combination.
